F

Fabric: Refers to any woven, knitted, plaited, braided, felted, or non woven material made of fibres or yarns.

Faille: Is a light ribbed silk or rayon cloth with crosswise rib effect, therefore making it part of the grosgrain family of fabric. It is soft in terms of hand and creates good draping effects.

Faille Crepe: This fabric has a smooth, dull and richer face eefect of crepe-de-chine.

Faille Taffeta: This is made on a plain weave base, occasionally on a twill construction. It has a crisp and stiff finish with a very fine cross-rib filling effect.

False twist: This is achieved by a rotating spindle twisting yarn which is then set in a heater-box or tube.

Fasciated Yarn: Consists of a core of discontinuous fibres with minimal or no twist around which a surface fibre is wrapped to make a bundle.

Fell: This term refers to the few newly woven picks in fabrics which are closest to the reed of the loom.

Finish: Is a term given to the treatment of fabric to achieve the desired effect. Special finishes can be applied to ensure that the fabric is waterproof, crease resistant, etc… Finish of cloth or fabric effects the ‘feel’ or ‘hand’ of fabric.

Fisheye: Is a pattern on fabric similar in shape to that of a fish’s eye. It is also comparable to that of the birdseye weave.

Flannel: This is fabric which has a slightly nap on both side to create a similar effect as a woollen fabric.

Flat Knit: This fabric is constructed on a flat-bed knitting frame . Needles are laid out in a straight line. This method of knitting differs from the tubular fabric made on a circular frame.

Float: Is a section of a warp or weft that extends over two or more adjacent warp ends or filling picks during weaving which assist in creating certain motif effects.

Frenchback: A cloth with corded twill backing of a different weave than the face of the cloth, which is a clear finish.
